CLASSIC MUSICALS I'D FORCE ANYONE TO WATCH IF I WAS EMPRESS OF THE GALAXY // MUSICALES CLÁSICOS QUE OBLIGARÍA A TODOS A VER SI FUERA EMPERATRIZ DE LA GALAXIA

 Happy Wicked Day! // Feliz Día de Wicked!

Well, Wicked doesn’t premiere today, but I’m going to see it, and I "couldn’t be happier!" I’m practically "defying gravity!" (See what I did there?) I have literally been waiting for this movie to come out since I was a starry-eyed 16-year-old playing the Wicked soundtrack on repeat in the car (much to my dad’s dismay). This might just be my favorite musical of all time—but who can really pick a favorite child?

Back in 2007, a few friends and I even tried to make our own Wicked movie (hi Augusta, Patrick, and Emily, if you ever read this). But I imagine the production value for the one I’m about to see is, uh, just a bit higher. And maybe Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey are slightly better casting choices. Just kidding—I’m sure they’ll be absolutely amazing!

But enough gushing about how excited I am to watch this. Let me share with you a list of classic musicals that I think everyone should see. Now, I’m not saying there aren’t other musicals that are equally amazing and classic, but these are the ones I’d force you to watch if I were Empress of the Galaxy. MUAHAHAHA!

Bueno, Wicked no se estrena hoy, pero ¡voy a verla y "no podría estar más feliz"! ¡Estoy prácticamente "desafiando la gravedad"! (¿Entiendes la referencia?) Literalmente he estado esperando que salga esta película desde que era una soñadora adolescente de 16 años, escuchando el soundtrack de Wicked en repetición en el auto (para la desesperación de mi papá). Puede que este sea mi musical favorito de todos los tiempos, pero, ¿quién puede realmente elegir a un hijo favorito?

En 2007, unos amigos y yo incluso intentamos hacer nuestra propia versión de la película de Wicked (¡hola Augusta, Patrick y Emily, si alguna vez leen esto!). Pero me imagino que el valor de producción de la que voy a ver hoy es, eh, solo un poquito más alto. Y tal vez Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo y Jonathan Bailey sean elecciones de reparto ligeramente mejores. ¡Es broma, estoy segura de que serán absolutamente increíbles!

Pero basta de hablar de lo emocionada que estoy por verla. Déjenme compartirles una lista de musicales clásicos que creo que todos deberían ver. No estoy diciendo que no haya otros musicales igual de increíbles y clásicos, pero estos son los que obligaría a ver si fuera la Emperatriz de la Galaxia. ¡MUAHAHAHA!

1. Wicked

As I mentioned above, I LOVE this musical. Honestly, it has so many amazing songs: "Popular," "Defying Gravity," "For Good" (God, that one always makes me cry). I could go on and on because they’re all just so good. Well, I’ll just leave "Popular" here because it’s so damn catchy.

Como mencioné antes, AMO este musical. Honestamente, tiene tantas canciones increíbles: "Popular," "Defying Gravity," "For Good" (Dios, esa siempre me hace llorar). Podría seguir y seguir porque todas son simplemente buenísimas. Bueno, aquí les dejo "Popular" porque es demasiado pegajosa.

 

2. The Sound of Music

Julie Andrews, need I say more? She is an absolute gem. This musical is an absolute gem. You wouldn't think that a musical set in Austria at the start of WWII could have so many peppy songs, but alas, it does. 

Fun fact that no one cares about: I auditioned for the part of a lamb in a play by singing the goatiest part of The Lonely Goatherd song (see below). I'd like to think that I got the part due to my amazing goat-yodelling skills, but I also think I was the only person who specifically auditioned for that role, so I guess we'll never know.

Julie Andrews. ¿Necesito decir más? Es una joya absoluta. Este musical es una joya absoluta. ¿Quién hubiera pensado que un musical ambientado en Austria al inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial podría tener tantas canciones animadas? Y, sin embargo, las tiene.

Dato curioso que nadie pidió: una vez audicioné para el papel de un cordero en una obra cantando la parte más "cabrita" de "The Lonely Goatherd" (véase abajo). Me gusta pensar que obtuve el papel gracias a mis increíbles habilidades de yodel de cabra, pero también sospecho que fui la única persona que audicionó específicamente para ese papel. Así que supongo que nunca lo sabremos.

3. Fiddler on the Roof

Even Gwen Stefani has to admit this musical is one of the best of the best (If you listed to the radio in English around 2004, you'll know what I am referring to.) As with the Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof has some historical context that will enrich your viewing experience as well as themes of traditions vs change, family, identity, persecution, etc. 

Even if you are weird and hate music, the story is a great one. I'm going to put If I Were a Rich Man here so that maybe you will get my Gwen Stefani reference, but I actually think Sunrise, Sunset is my personal favorite. Dang, I'll just put them both.

Incluso Gwen Stefani tiene que admitir que este musical es uno de los mejores de los mejores. (Si escuchabas la radio en inglés alrededor de 2004, sabrás a qué me refiero.) Al igual que The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof ofrece algo de contexto histórico que enriquecerá tu experiencia, junto con temas como tradición vs. cambio, familia, identidad, persecución y más.

Incluso si eres de esos raros que odian la música (sin juicio… bueno, tal vez un poquito), la historia en sí es fantástica. Voy a poner "If I Were a Rich Man" aquí para que entiendas la referencia a Gwen Stefani, pero, siendo honesta, "Sunrise, Sunset" es probablemente mi favorita personal. ¿Sabes qué? Voy a incluir ambas—¿por qué elegir?

4. Les Miserables

Ok maybe most of these have a strong historical context and Les Mis comes with a whopper of a book by Victor Hugo to go along with it (fyi Wicked is also based on a book, but is obviously not historical.) 

Honestly, the 2012 Les Mis movie was *chef's kiss* fantastic. Like, those in-your-face close-up shots of snot-crying while singing? Bravo.

Bueno, tal vez la mayoría de estos musicales tienen un fuerte contexto histórico, y Les Mis viene con el extra de un libro enorme de Victor Hugo como complemento. (Por cierto, Wicked también está basado en un libro, aunque obviamente no es histórico).

Honestamente, la película de Les Mis de 2012 fue chef’s kiss fantástica. Esos primeros planos de lágrimas y mocos mientras cantan… Bravo.

5. West Side Story

Not one, but TWO of these musicals have songs called "Maria". In case you didn't know, West Side Story is a 1950s retelling of Romeo and Juliet but instead of the Montagues and Capulets, it's New York's street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Even if you hate musicals, you'll be singing these songs for a few days after watching it.

No uno, sino dos de estos musicales tienen canciones llamadas "Maria". Por si no lo sabías, West Side Story es una versión de los años 50 de Romeo y Julieta, pero en lugar de los Montesco y los Capuleto, son las pandillas de Nueva York: los Sharks y los Jets.

Incluso si no te gustan los musicales, estarás tarareando estas canciones durante días después de verla.

 

Super Special Bonus: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

SO. MUCH. TESTOSTERONE. This one isn't so much a classic like the others. If you're only mildly into musicals, I bet you can't name a single song from this musical. But damn, it's good. I'm not going to lie, I had a major crush on Frank (the red-shirt brother) as a kid. While there's no singing in the Barn Dance (which I'm going to share here), it's the best scene IMHO. Having a bunch of mountain men do a dance off to win you over? Please and thank you.

TANTA. TESTOSTERONA. Este no es exactamente un clásico como los demás. Si solo te interesan los musicales de manera moderada, apuesto a que no podrías nombrar ni una sola canción de este. Pero vaya, qué bueno es. No voy a mentir: tenía un mega crush en Frank (el hermano de la camisa roja) cuando era niña. Aunque en la escena del Barn Dance (que voy a compartir aquí) no hay canto, es la mejor escena, en mi humilde opinión. ¿Un grupo de hombres de las montañas haciendo un duelo de baile para conquistarte? Sí, por favor y gracias.
